Exciting News! Under the CARE-WWF Alliance, we launched the Sowing Change project in Loitokitok, Kajiado County, and is set to make a significant impact, particularly in the Amboseli-Chyulu sub-landscape. The project‘s main objective is to boost economic, ecological and climate resilience within local communities.

“The focus is to grow a movement to restore landscapes and build climate resilience. The project will empower women change makers through training and networking, while concurrently engaging men and boys in the communities to promote gender equality and equitable attitudes,” said Dr John Kioko — Programme Coordinator, Amboseli-Chyulu Sub-landscape, WWF-Kenya.

The one-year project has adopted a multifaceted approach that encompasses habitat restoration, strengthening women’s leadership, the establishment of women-led nature-based enterprises, and equitable decision-making while fostering the protection and restoration of the natural environment.

Some of the existing culture-based livelihoods that will be enhanced under the project include cattle rearing and dairy farming with an emphasis on regenerative grazing, improved animal husbandry, and other assisted natural regeneration practices to minimize environmental impact.

Specifically, the Sowing Change project will be implemented in Kuku and Kimana Wards. It aims to positively impact 6,000 people through 20 groups comprising 50 households each.

These women and youth change-makers will lead nature-based enterprises, contribute to locally-led development, and enhance their access to finance through Village Savings and Loans Association groups.

By empowering women to lead in nature-based solutions, the initiative not only addresses climate challenges but also supports local communities and ensures a sustainable future for all. The project’s holistic approach promises positive outcomes, creating a model that can be replicated and scaled to bring about lasting change.
