The Lake Naivasha Basin is a critical ecosystem, a priority landscape area essential to Kenya’s economy. Unsustainable agriculture is one of the key threats to the basin that thousands depend on. If we don’t act now to reverse nature loss, the critical ecosystem will collapse.

How can we create high impact and cost-effective innovative solutions that address unsustainable agriculture among smallholder farmers and facilitate a green, local, circular economy in the landscape that supports Kenya’s largest freshwater lake?

Through our pioneer Innovation program- Panda Labs we are choosing to do away with business as usual approaches. Instead, we prioritise innovative solutions that support a green local circular economy among smallholder farmers — in our regional innovative hackathon where creative minds will work together and come up with sustainable solutions and options to address various challenges faced by farmers.

Farmers from the Basin, Government officials, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) experts, Entrepreneurs, Innovators, Software Developers, including university students will come together to collaborate and brainstorm ideas and solutions on:

  1. Unsustainable agriculture among smallholder farmers threaten the provision of ecosystem services and undermines resilience.
  2. Inappropriate land-use practices by mainly small-scale farmers in the upper and middle catchments have continued to impact negatively on both water quantity and quality.
  3. Degradation of the catchment and in particular the destruction of forests is causing water stress, gradually manifesting itself in the river base flows and fluctuating water levels in Lake Naivasha.

What is Panda Labs?

Panda Labs is our pioneer Innovation program. We disrupt business as usual. We accelerate environmental solutions through bold collaborations and channel funds for environmental innovation. We do this by building the ‘innovation for impact’ ecosystem and leveraging the power of the WWF network.
